MEDS Byblos ‘18 DiverCity Workshop | Motions in Byblos
Motions in Byblos was one of the 15 projects of the 9th edition of MEDS (Meeting of Design Students) workshop. MEDS ‘18 took place in Byblos, Lebanon. The title of the workshop was DiverCity. We were challenged with public spaces - how to transform and interact with them to make them more friendly for local people.
Motions in Byblos is an interactive media place to experiment with the animated memories of the city. The structure and the animation merge together in front of the ancient columns. One can see the contrast of the technology while the animation continues to show different moments from the city itself. Also, it invites people to step inside to see the memories from the city like in a dream.
Minimalistic and touching design allows the people to interact with the place. Selected materials are sanded wood, black steel, white tulles hanged with ropes and the animated light of the projector as an immaterial. The structure is created to be a place that defines an area in the lightest way. The place contains more experimental abstract elements rather than concrete components.
The concept of the animation contains the ideas collected from the city during the search of experimental components. These components are active senses and the feelings happening at a subconscious level. Some of these components are transferred through verbal ways and others directly to the product.
The main materials for the animation are the videos that were recorded in the exploring process of the city. That collected videos blend together in the experience via rotoscope technique of animation.
The place is known through the eyes, mind, and experience. This place gives you a chance to step into the memories of the dreaming city. The media space has its own moving features like the tulles swaying with wind and the projected animation. Besides these structural materials, the ancient columns and the interacting people are also immersed in the place.
